Art Deco bronze lamp of a seated Egyptian dancer by Sybille May


Art Deco cubist style patinated bronze lamp of a seated Egyptian dancer. The semi nude, seated female is holding an alabaster shade above her head. The green patinated bronze is highlighted with gold. Marble base. Signed in the bronze Sybille May. A stunning piece. It has been rewired and PAT tested. Condition is excellent. The alabaster shade is original but has a small chip in the top. The marble base has a few small nibbles. This is a very rare and striking piece. This piece was made in France c 1925

Little is known about Sybille May. She was born in England but worked in France in the 1920’s and early 1930’s . She was part of the Arthur Goldscheider  groups of artists La Stele and L’Evolution and was known for her Cubism influenced figures in the style of Art Deco. Some of her angular ceramic figures were decorated in subtle monochromatic hues by her friend and colleague of the group La Stele , Édouard Cazaux (1889-1974). She also collaborated with the sculptor Pierre Le Faguays .  May worked with bronze (partly gilded) and ceramics; Many of her were made by the Goldscheiders foundry and other works were produced and distributed by Éditeur d’art Albert Buisson.
