Born in Thorun in Poland. He studied at the Konigliche Akademie of Berlin. In 1900 he went to Paris where he lived at the Cite des Fusains, an artists residence located at 22 rue Tourlaque in Montmartre and became a pupil of Antonin Larroux. He exhibited with success at all the French salons. In 1902-1909 he exhibited at the Societe des Artistes Francais where his bronze, marble and ivory statuette Famiente and his bronze, marble and ivory group Grace et Force (Grace and Strength) both produced by Goldscheider were shown. In 1907 his sculpture Le Reveil (The Awakening) was exhibited. In 1910 his Girl with Mirror gained critical acclaim. It was produced in two versions – nude and draped both in bronze and ivory.

In the 1920s Philippe again worked in Berlin, where he created several figures for Rosenthal und Maeder(RuM) and later for Preiss and Kassler (PK) when Kassler took over. In 1930 his figures were exhibited on the Preiss and Kassler stand at the Leipzig Fair.

Philippe worked in both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles in the 19th and 20th Century; working in bronze, bronze and ivory and pure ivory his figures are sought after worldwide by collectors. Amongst his most recognised works are Le Reveil – the Awakening, Russian Dancer and ‘Radha
