Art Deco gilt Bronze dancer by Lucien Alliot

Art Deco gilt bronze figure of a dancer by Lucien Alliot showing a beautiful female nude standing on one foot and holding a hoop. This charming figure shows excellent hand finished detail and is very finely sculpted. The figure stands on a shaped marble base, the colour of which compliments the figure perfectly. The piece is signed in the bronze and has a foundry mark Unis France. A superb example of Art Deco sculpture.

Lucien Charles  Edouard Alliot was born in Paris in 1877. He was a pupil of Barrias and Coutan and the son of Napoleon Alliot, who was also a sculptor. Lucien Alliot regularly exhibited at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français during the period from 1905-39. He was a member since 1899 and became its president in 1934. In addition to genre scenes and portraits, he also worked on religious themes. His work is listed in Bryan Catley Art Deco and Other Figures. He died in Nanteuil-les-Mieux in 1867

Art Deco was named after the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts held in Paris in 1925. It was the successor to and a reaction against art nouveau. Seen in furniture, pottery, textiles, jewellery, and glass it was also a notable style of cinema and hotel architecture.

Its chief difference from art nouveau is the influence of cubism which gives art deco design generally a more fragmented, geometric character. However, imagery based on plant forms, and sinuous curves remained in some art deco design, for example that of Clarice Cliff. Art deco also varied in its influences, taking inspiration from ancient Egyptian art, Aztec and other ancient Central American art. It also drew on the modern architecture and design of the Bauhaus, and of architects such as Le Corbusier and Mies van de Rohe.
