An Art Nouveau patinated bronze figure of a  female nude by Otto Schmidt Hofer ‘Posing’. Signed in the bronze Schmidt Hofer. Red marble base. The figure is standing tall with one hand behind her head striking a pose.  A similar figure is shown in Bermans Bronzes Volume 4 item 4277. The figure is very finely detailed and well sculpted. In excellent original condition and was made in Germany c 1910


Otto Schmidt-Hofer (1873-1925 was a German sculptor who worked mainly in Germany during the late 19th century and early 20th century. His work was primarily Neoclassical and Art Nouveau between 1893-1914 and Art Deco from 1915 until his death in 1925. He was a very versatile sculptor and was able to transition from the style of Art Nouveau to Art Deco without difficulty. He was born in Berlin in 1873 and studied at the Akademie der Kunst in Berlin and at the Berlin Academy of Decorative Arts. He was a member of the National Association of Artists in Germany. This figure was produced in Germany c 1910. He produced a number of sculptures of blacksmiths, masons at work, athletes and warriors. Already before Word War I he had gained fame and exhibited his works in nearly every famous gallery in Europe. He lived in Paris until 1914. In 1921 he almost died from starvation in post-war Berlin. Schmidt Hofer died in Berlin in 1925. He was regarded as one of the premier sculptors ever produced by Germany and his work is featured in many Museums and private collections in Europe.
