History
The Art Nouveau style (c. 1880 to 1910) was a conscious attempt at modernism and the first departure for many artists from traditional Victorian design. Designers took inspiration from Japanese, Celtic and other folk art, moving away from classical European art instead influenced by the natural world.
Typical Art Nouveau motifs came from nature: flowers, insects and birds. There are two distinct looks within the style: curvy soft lines and more austere, linear designs from artists, such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
Date c 1900
