Description

Art Deco silvered bronze figure of naked female dancer standing on one leg holding a pair of cymbals in her hand. A very striking figure that is full of the movement and style that embodies Art Deco sculpture at its finest. A superb cast, well detailed and hand finished. The figure stands on a Portoro marble base and is signed Aurore Onu in the marble. There is a foundry seal to the underside of the base for Les Neveux de J Lehmann Company. A similar figure is shown in Art Deco and other figures by Bryan Catley. A beautiful piece of Art Deco Sculpture

History

Aurore Onu was born in Bucharest, Romania and moved to Paris in the 1920s. There she met the sculptor Marcel André Bouraine and became his companion (at this time they were neighbours of Pierre Le Faguays). Onu´s sculptures were cast by Etling and also by Les Neveux de J. Lehmann Company. She exhibited at the Salon of the Société des Artists Français several times.

Her style generally was towards the classical athletic female being similar to the works by Bouraine and Pierre Le Faguays (and his wife Raymonde Guerbe aka Andrée Guerval).

Les Neveux de J. Lehmann
The bronze foundry was run by brothers Jules and Hugo Levy in Paris. They were very active during the 1920s and 30s producing bronze figures and decorative objects by sculptors such as Chiparus, Descomps, Gennarelli and Le Faguays.
