Gabriel Argy Rousseau Pate de verre Chardons vase

A beautiful  multi-coloured Pate de verre vase ‘Chardons’. Made c 1915 in France. The vase is decorated with a Chardon or Thistle. A similar piece is shown in Janine Bloch-Dermant, “G. Argy-Rousseau catalogue raisonné”, Les Éditions de l’Amateur, 1990, n° 15.03, page 178 . The subtle green and blue hues of the pate de verre glass make this a most charming piece. The vase is signed G Argy Rousseau and was made when Argy Rousseau was at the height of his achievements. The Thistle was an important symbol in France and was the emblem of the region of Alsace Lorraine.

Argy Rousseau (1885-1953) was born near Chartres in 1885 and showed early talent as a designer and artist. He met the Pate de Verre pioneer Henri Cros in 1902 . He first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes in Paris in 1914 and quickly achieved recognition and success for his work. He had a very definite style which incorporated the simplicity of shapes and the symmetrical decorative friezes with straight lines. This was the opposite of the sinuous lines then in fashion. His technique also incorporated gold, brass and cobalt oxides into the glass to produce the wide range of colours that are typical of his work. Because of the way the glass is produced no two pieces are ever the same as the mould could only be used once.  The overall number of items made from each design was very small as the production techniques are necessarily very time consuming and complicated. He considered each piece to be a work of art and supervised every stage of the making of each piece.

The subtleties and rarity of pate de verre pieces and the beautiful colours make these vases highly sought after.
