Art Deco bronze nude figure of a standing female by Joe Descomps




Femme Nue – A stunning Art Deco gilt bronze figure of a standing beauty posing with her arms behind her head. Marble base. Signed in the bronze. Approx height 29 cm including base. Excellent original condition with very fine hand finished detail. French c 1925. A similar figure appears in Bryan Catley – Art Deco and other Figures page 138. A charming example.


DESCOMPS, JOSEPH. 1869 – 1950 French Sculptor, born Joseph Emmanuel Descomps – Cormier in Clermont-Ferrand on the 18th January 1869. Studied under Hiollin and exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artists, he won medals in 1921, 1925 and 1928. He also exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and the Tuileries. He specialised in figural statues, mainly ladies. Signed his name – Joe Descomps and sometimes signed Joseph Cormier. He designed and executed a wide range of objects in the Art Nouveau and art deco style, including jewellery, sculptures in bronze, stone, and ceramics. In the 1920s he concentrated more on small-scale sculptures, mostly in bronze and bronze / ivory. His work is in many museum collections in France including the muse d’Orsay, musée du Louvre département des Sculptures, Musee Du Luxembourg, Musee National d’art Moderne
