French Art Deco bronze dancer by Aurore Onu Cymbal Dance

French Art Deco bronze dancer by Aurore Onu Cymbal Dancer. A finely detailed and well cast figure of a young woman standing on tiptoe and holding polished bronze cymbals. This beautiful figure has a green brown patina and stands on a Brazilian portoro marble base. The base is signed Aurore Onu. And the number 7 can be seen under one foot. There is a small place in the underside of the base where a foundry pellet would have been. In excellent original condition and a superb example of Art Deco sculpture.

History

Aurore Onu – flourished in the 1920’s

Onu was active as a sculptor of figures in the Art Deco style between approximately 1920 and 1930. Her works predominantly depicted athletic female figures on marble pedestals, which embodied “the stylish and independent woman typical of the Art Deco period.” ^] She produced a number of bronze and ivory sculptures for the Parisian foundry Les Neveux de Jules Lehmann , and other works were produced by the Edmond Etling foundry . At the Salon des Artistes Français in 1924, she exhibited her work Bacchante au Thyrse , a fauna with a circular thyrsus . She exhibited several times at this annual Salon. 

A table lamp made in 1925 by the sculptor Max Le Verrier , featuring a seated female figure holding an illuminated glass sphere representing the moon on her knees and hands, is titled Aurore Onu .   A bas-relief made by the sculptor Raymonde Guerbe , which she exhibited at the Salon d’Automne of the Société du Salon d’Automne in 1925 , is titled Aurore .
